As a science interpreter, I work with a lot of animal bones. This means that I am often responsible for explaining the concept of mortality to very young children who do not understand that a skeleton is not alive.
That’s fine when they’re 2 to 6 years old. They usually accept it with some confusion or file it away to worry about later. Older children who do not yet know what death is present some difficulties. If a 9 year old asks me, “Why won’t this skeleton wake up?” it may be because their ignorance of death has been preserved on purpose. I do not sugar-coat science or use confusing euphemisms, but figuring out exactly where to start answering that in a way they can process is… tricky. I tend to get caught up in trying to parse their preexisting knowledge. Do they know what it means to be ‘alive’ in a biological sense? Do they know what hearts and brains and other organs do? Do they know that we have bones inside of us?
Please, parents. If you’re shunting the responsibility of explaining mortality to your child onto me, please give me time to implement a personalized lesson.

They’re all works that are examinations of compelling but deeply flawed (usually narcissistic and violent) men. People rightly like all these works because they are good, but the implication of the original post is that if a guy says they are his favorite work, he is probably misunderstanding the point of the work and instead idolizing the male protagonist and is unable to recognize their flaws.

Didn’t even the creator of Fight Club advise against a relationship with anyone who said it was their favorite movie?

Not just that, he also started refusing to sign for folks at book signings if they expressed admiration/admonishment of Tyler. At least one person he straight up asked “You know he’s the villain, right?”

teaching children that they are allowed to walk away and cool off if they are feeling overwhelmed might literally save their life as teens/adults

could save other ppls lives too.

I feel like the key here is letting them know that they can come back to the discussion, and that you’re not just sending them to their room with different words

“go calm down” is just dismissive, but “go calm down and we’ll talk more about this in half an hour” validates the child and lets them know that you’re not just brushing them off

its also worth noting that “go calm down” as a statement, regardless of what follows it, comes across as dismissive. add plurality to the comment.

“LET’S go calm down.” “LET’S take a break” “WE BOTH should step away”

never expect a child to do what you yourself arent willing to do in the situation. otherwise, its just a time out.
